So You Want to be a Movie Critic Part. I

Filed under: Entertainment Events — admin at 3:52 am on Monday, April 27, 2009

So you want to be a movie critic? Who doesn’t. It is a great job to have. I mean if you love movies, then what better way to make a living then watching them and telling people what you think about the movie you just saw. Most of us are already critics, but it is a big jump from just telling your friends what you think to making money telling the world what you think. The jump is big but not insurmountable and the first step is to know how to write a good review. Well of course, you may say, but it is not as easy as it may seem. Anybody can write a review, but not everyone can write a good, compelling, I have to read this person’s review before I go to the movie’s this weekend, review. What’s the difference?

1. Actively Watch the Movie - Yes, I recognize that movie watching is a passive activity. Watching a movie isn’t something you do, it is something that happens to you. However if you’re planning on being a movie critic you have to learn how to watch a film with a critical eye. This means you need to pay attention to everything and I mean Everything. Notice how the actors are placed in each shot, the setting, the camera angles, even the music. All of these elements play a role in the story that is trying to be told and are important to talk about if you want to write the compelling sort of reviews that you’ll need to write if you want or make a living at reviewing movies.

2. Take Copious Notes - No, I don’t expect you to sit in a theatre with pen and pad or laptop in hand. But I do expect you to take solid mental notes. Once you make a name for yourself you’ll probably be attending advance screenings of films and won’t see these movies again before your review will be due, so it becomes necessary for you to be able to take solid notes, mental or otherwise of some of the more important elements of the film. Information such as the actor’s names or who the director was is easy to come across, but information like camera shots, or plot devices is not, so you need to train yourself not only to watch for that type of information but also to remember it.

3. Summarize. Don’t Spoil. - This is important. Nothing is worse then reading a review that tells the whole movie from beginning to end and leaves nothing for you to see. You’re being paid for your opinion, not to be a spoiler. A basic summation of the plot is all that is necessary. From there you can talk about whether or not the plot worked well or was the plot even a plot at all. Let the details of the film be revealed when your readers see the film, not when they read your review.

4. Critical Analysis is Key - The difference between a review anyone can write and a review someone will not only pay you to write but people will clamor to read is how well you analyze the film. Think about those papers you had to write for lit class in college. The professor didn’t want you to just tell him what the book was about but wanted you to break down the themes in the book and how they related to the plot, the characters, etc. Well the same is true for a movie review. No one wants a summary of events or the plot. A good review will examine the themes or ideas the movie raises and talk about how well or not so well the movie executed those themes and ideas.

5. Point Out the Pros and the Cons - No movie is perfect and rarely is any movie all bad, so take the time to talk about what the movies does well and what it does not so well.

6. Be Open Minded - If you’re serious about doing this for a living then you’re going to watch movies from genres you don’t like. You may hate romantic comedies but you find yourself having to review one every week. It’s okay that you don’t like the genre but be able to know a good film in that genre when you see one. A movie can be a good film and well made even if personally you feel the whole genre should be wiped off the face of the earth. Learn to know the difference between a good movie and a bad movie in a particular genre of film that you may detest.

7. Be Original - For some folk it is two thumbs up, for others it is rotten tomatoes. Whatever you decide you want your rating system to be, be original. Try to find a hook that works for you. Just don’t do something that closely resembles someone else or you’ll just seem like a bad copy of the original.

8. Have Fun - You’re not saving the world here, but you are trying to save a person’s movie going experience, so relax, have fun, and remember this is a great job to have and you’re one lucky person if you can say this is what you do for a living.

Magic Tricks And Kids, What A Combination!

Filed under: Entertainment Events — admin at 8:22 am on Sunday, April 26, 2009

Magic Tricks and Kids

Performing magic tricks for people is always fun. I can honestly say I will never get bored or tired of doing magic tricks for people as long as I live. There is something about getting that reaction of disbelief from people. Having that satisfaction just for a moment that what your spectators just witnessed you do, may have indeed been real magic. To be able to put doubt in their head, even know they know it really is just a “trick”, they some how start to question themselves that maybe, just maybe, you truly are magical. Just to watch someone’s eyes, the laughter, and even the odd screams, it is something I will always cherish and continue to appreciate when I perform magic tricks. But there is something a little more special when doing magic tricks for specific people. The people that I am referring to are kids.

The Imagination of Kids

Magic tricks and kids is quite a combination. Kids seem to have a very different perception of the world than adults. What goes on in their little minds, I don’t think we will ever understand or grasp but it is pure entertainment and just plain innocent fun. For instance, when I performed a very famous coin trick for a little boy, the boy was maybe 6 years old, his expression and the words that came out of his mouth were priceless. I made the coin disappear in front of his eyes and did the classic move of pulling the coin out from his ear. Well, this boy’s mouth went as wide as the moon, I mean I could of just put my hand in his mouth and easily removed his tonsils for him, hopefully he won’t need that done down the road, but it’s those type of reactions that I love. Then, the words that end up coming out that mouth are even more priceless. Something that you can never prepare yourself for, and I quote, “Wow, can you pull more money out of my ear so I can buy a new bike!”. Well, I couldn’t stop laughing for about a minute, I am not sure if he understood what just happened but it’s instances like these where reality just doesn’t matter, just pure innocent fun.

Magic in their Eyes

Kids alone, just being themselves, bring their own type of magic to us. One place that comes to my mind is Disney World. When kids see or hear about Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck, their eyes light up, a smile comes to their face, just a magical glow all around. I get this same look when I pull a rabbit from a hat, or make a worm crawl out of my pocket and onto my arm. It’s really not hard to make kids laugh and be astonished at what you do. You know they are not out there to try and figure out how you did that or try and spoil your magic trick, they are there to be entertained, they are there for the magic.

Filed under: Entertainment Events — admin at 3:31 am on Saturday, April 18, 2009

California recording artist Kirby Shields will be shooting a music video for his new song “Freakalicious” with legendary Commedian Gallagher on Monday July 19th at the Ocean Lounge (1310 Howe Ave.) in Sacramento. Gallagher is meeting the R&B recording artist in California for three days in mid July to film the video and is presently shooting for his upcoming comedy televison series, which will be featuring Shield’s music. Kirby will be releasing his new CD “Pleasure And Pain” in early-to-mid August 2004. For more info visit http://www.kirbyshields.com

Hot R&B recording artist Kirby Shields will be shooting his “Freakalicious” music video with Hollywood funnyman Gallagher to promote Shields upcoming album “Pleasure And Pain”, which will be released in August 2004.

Gallagher is presently shooting his new comedy televison series, which will be featuring Shield’s music. Industry insiders expect
Gallagher’s new television show to be on their watch list for this fall’s hottest renderings.

Legendary Warner Brothers record producer Ian Samwell discovered Shields in April of 2001, while attending the Sammy’s (Sacramento Area Music Awards). Samwell wrote the first top ten rock-and-roll hit in history (Move it) and launched such notable musical acts as America and Small Faces (which included Rod Stewart). Samwell worked with countless other artists, while with Warner Brothers U.K. and Warner U.S.A., such as Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead), Cliff Richards, Neil Sedaka and many more.

According to Shields, “Freakalicious is a fun up-beat dance song that always gets people on their feet. I asked Gallagher to appear in the video, so we could capture that same magic. Gallagher’s always been my favorite commedian and it is always a blast to work with him. The last time I did a show with Gallagher, he covered me with Mustard!”

“My new album has 19 songs and chronicles my life and the lives of those around me. With the video, I want to showcase my song, beautiful women and edgy comic relief with my friend Gallagher. There will be a lot of crazy dancing and we have some really wild things planned, so make sure to email and call MTV to request ‘Freakalicious.’”

Shields began his songwriting and recording career, while writing and producing songs with Doug Rasheed. Rasheed later signed with Polygram Records and went on to produce hits for Tupac, Coolio, Brandi and others. Shields later worked with John Fitch in New York and Philadelphia. Fitch was the music producer for Evelyn Champagne King and did her first hit, “Shame.”

But Shields next break came when Warner Brothers producer and A/R rep., Ian Samwell worked to develop his music. “Ian Samwell was a genius in the studio, because of his attention to detail and ability to make the most of each song. He really knew how to get the best out of me and I’ll always love him for that.” (Editor’s note: Samwell passed away March 13, 2003)

Kirby has also produced original music with Dennis Austin (Bobby Browns’ music composer), Flip Kirby (drummer for Bobby Brown), Stephanie Mills, and hit producer Vernell Blake.

Hijinx with the Super Nanny

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 1:10 am on Saturday, April 18, 2009

Every time I think I have found the worst show on television, another comes up and hits me in the neck, in the same way a dart hits the outside of a dartboard… except without a dart. In this case, I am referring to my plan to write about Nickelodeon’s “Hijinx,” the show that lets parents play practical jokes on their kids, kind of like the old “Candid Camera” except not remotely funny. My dislike for this show primarily centers upon the fact that many of these young kids are dumb to begin with, in which case a practical joke is not necessary. The joke could simply be replaced by a parent-to-child comment like, “You are a fool and I don’t like you,” which would cause the child to cry and ponder his or her existence. Then the parent could laugh a few days later and reveal the joke, only after the child has gone through hours of therapy at school, as provided by the school bus driver. Now this would be a show worth watching…

Another show I dislike is “Super Nanny,” one of many shows on television to utilize a big adjective to make up for its less than stellar effect. This is a very similar show to “Nanny 911,” “Fanny the Nanny,” and of course “Killer Nanny From Outer Space.” In “Super Nanny,” a hired nanny — in this case a super one with a British accent — is brought in to fix a messed-up household. Unfortunately this nanny does not wear a cape, which makes the “super” aspect hard to understand. Second, any household that feels it is so broken that it needs to bring in a televised super nanny really just needs to start over. It’s not hard: just rewind a few years when the decision to have kids first came up and change “Let’s have kids” to “Let’s make a sandwich.” Granted, some needy network will probably pick up the show “Super Sandwich” to capitalize on this decision, but that concept would get boring after a couple of years of watching some big guy spread mustard on bread…

Finally, there is the newest show of the unwatchable nature in the form of FOX’s “Unanimous,” where the network has trapped several strangers in a location without clocks and entertainment. Granted, without entertainment there is no need for clocks, but I am sure FOX will constantly add drama to this show by making sure one of the people yells out, “Ah, I need a clock! For crying out loud, what time is it?” and then someone will always respond, “There are no clocks, man. They took away all the clocks.” This exchange of words would be funny only on “Hijinx” and maybe on “Super Nanny.” The difference between “Unanimous” and other bad shows is that the former is giving away 1.5 million dollars to the person chosen by all of the others — unanimously.

However, TV producers need to realize that viewers don’t want to see strangers trapped in a room with each other because it will take too long for them to become annoyed. How about stepping it up a notch and trapping a family in one room? Or better yet, take a class reunion and announce they are all trapped in a room for three weeks — now that’s drama. Regardless, this whole set-up of trapping strangers in a room must be what television networks do on a regular basis in order to produce horrible shows like these…

But I digress.
