Great Christmas Light String

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin at 9:05 am on Sunday, November 30, 2008

One of the most important decorations that most use each year around the holidays is the Christmas light string. These come in many colors and varieties, and even those who do not do a lot of decorating will have a few of these in their home. They always look good on the tree, and they have decorating potential in all areas of your home and even outside. Best of all, they don’t have to cost a lot to look good, and finding them is a breeze in most cases.

A Christmas light string will look great on a tree, though you may have to have more than one. You can get a very long string in one color if you wish, or you can find some strings that have multiple colors. If you only want to have two colors - white and blue, for example - you can get two smaller strings and put them both on the tree. That way you get what you want, but you did not have to search high and low for a specific string of Christmas lights that might have had just the two colors you were interested in having for your tree décor.

When you are decorating the rest of your home for Christmas, you can use your Christmas light string just about anywhere, as long as you have a way to plug it in and it won’t keep you up at night. Some like to have the strings around the ceiling in certain rooms, or they like to line the doorways with them. You can pretty much do anything you want as long as you feel good about the look you have come up with. If electrical outlets are a problem, you can always search for battery powered Christmas lights to take care of that problem. However, then you do have to worry about batteries dying before the season is over.

You can also use your Christmas light string to put some light and color on the outside of your home. When you want to do this, you do have to choose strings that are made to outside in order to be sure your home and your family are safe. If you use the wrong set of lights outside, they could short out and set your home on fire. Always check each string for working bulbs and any frays on any wires so you are sure you are using lights that are as safe as they can be.

Don’t Go To The Movies - Bring The Theater To You!

Filed under: Entertainment Events — admin at 4:57 am on Friday, November 28, 2008

So, have you gone to the movies lately? Let’s face it, in

this day and age, going to the movies isn’t what it’s

cracked up to be. Recent studies have shown that box office

ticket sales have steadily declined over the years and the

reason is simple - years ago, if people wanted to see a

movie, they had no other choice other than going to the

theater. I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember the

last time I had a pleasant “movie going” experience. Let’s

look at what’s involved. First, you have to find out the

times and the movies that are playing. Next you have to get

in the car and drive to the theater giving yourself enough

time to park, get your tickets, buy your popcorn, etc. Okay,

now your all set and you enter the appropriate theater room

and find your seat. The movie begins and here come the

distractions. You have all the people straggling in that are

late, fumbling around in the dark trying to find their seat,

you have the whisperers, the plastic crinklers, the cell

phone talkers … I think you get the point. By the way, I

didn’t even mention the price of admission. Where I am from,

it costs about $7.50 US Dollars per person. Bring your

significant other, kids or whoever else and thow in the cost

of snacks ….. This is Big Bucks!

I don’t go to the theater anymore, because now I have

brought the theater to me. Yes, anytime I want to enjoy the

movie experience (without the above aggravations), I simply

change into my most comfortable lounging outfit and take the

long trip down 13 steps into my gameroom , which I have

transformed into a home theater. The advantages are

unbelievable. I don’t have to drive anywhere, worry about

parking, or deal with annoying people anymore. If I need to

stop the movie to use the restroom or fix a quick snack, I

just pause the movie and go do my thing.Yes, I still need to

spend money on movies, but the prices of DVD’s have dropped

tremendously and you can find many good deals on used DVD’s,

which are just as good as a brand new one. Even the cost of

a rental is at least half that of a theater ticket.

Don’t get me wrong, your going to have to shell out some

bucks, but you can put together a decent set up for much

less that you think. Basically, you need a flat screen tv

and a surround system and you are good to go. How fancy you

want to get all depends on your budget, but trust me, it

will be a great investment in the long run. Don’t forget to

keep all this in mind the next time your sitting at the

theater and the kid next to you starts screaming out in the

middle of the movie and the two teenagers in front of you

wont shut up.

“Are You Doing It on a Regular Basis?”

Filed under: Entertainment Events — admin at 6:40 pm on Tuesday, November 25, 2008

If you’re an ezine publisher I have one word for you: “consistency.”
When planning your newsletter, you need to decide how often your
ezine will be sent out to your subscribers. Essentially,
you need to create a schedule and stick with it. But how often
should you publish? How much is too much and how often is not
enough? When it comes to frequency, the usual choices are
daily, weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Let’s examine the pro’s
and cons of each one.

DAILY: If you plan on publishing a daily ezine be prepared
to do a lot of work. Think about it. That’s a total of
365 issues you’ll need to create every year. Not only is
this a monumental task, but daily publications can become
annoying fast especially since most of us are dealing with
information overload and bulging email boxes.

WEEEKLY: Once a week is a little better but it still can
be time consuming to produce a quality ezine on a regular
basis. That’s 48 issues in a year, still a lot of work.
Some are of the opinion that once a week is still a bit
too often and showing up in someone’s mail box four times a
month can appear to be too much for your subscribers.
On the pro side they’ll have a hard time forgetting about
you.

BI-WEEKLY: Every two weeks seems to be just the right
mix for many. Whereas weekly can be too much and once
a month not enough, every two weeks seems to work like
a charm. Publishing an ezine twice a month is just often
enough to keep you fresh in your subscribers’ minds but
not so often that they become annoyed with you and
start reaching for the unsubscribe link. As an ezine
publisher, twice a month can be easily worked into your
busy schedule without too much strain.

MONTHLY: Even though many ezine publishers go with a
monthly schedule, it does have its drawbacks.
Mailing just once a month can cause a subscriber to forget
who you are or that they even subscribed to your ezine
in the first place. Many a Spam compliant has started
this way. Don’t get me wrong, I subscribe to many
monthly ezines myself, but sometimes by the time I
receive an issue I’ve almost forgotten I was subscribed
to it. It just doesn’t seem often enough to keep the
publication fresh in my mind. On the plus side it’s not
too much that you’re messages become annoying.

So there you have it; the options for choosing an appropriate
publishing schedule. Which one is right for you will
depend on your time constraints and what you’re trying
to accomplish with your ezine. So next time someone tells
you it’s the size that matters don’t believe it — frequency
can make the difference between a memorable newsletter
and one that just fades into the woodwork.

So how often are you doing it?

Diary of a Mad Black Woman Doesn’t Disappoint, Unfortunately

Filed under: Entertainment Events — admin at 4:14 am on Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Tyler Perry strikes again as he brings his hugely successful theatrical stage play Diary of a Mad Black Woman to movie theaters nation wide. A cultural phenomenon, this is Perry’s chance to bring his play to a larger audience, unfortunately the movie, much like the play, falls flat.

Diary follows the life of Helen (Kimberly Elise) as she tries to put her life back to together after her husband, played by Steve Harris of The Practice fame, unceremoniously and rather cruelly throws her out of their sprawling mansion, officially ending their eighteen year marriage. Simple enough story right? Predictable but workable? Well if Diary had just stayed with that storyline then yes, it might have been a predictable but a rather entertaining film. Instead, Diary doesn’t stick to just that story line. It goes on to produce not one but five other subplots. These extra stories turn the movie into one big muddled mess that is never sure which way it is going.

In his defense Perry’s play is this muddled as well and what saves his play is the same thing that saves this film: Madea. Madea is Helen’s trash talking, pistol toting, you’re going to respect me or I’ll put a cap in your behind, grandma. Played by Perry himself she steals the film and makes sitting through this 116min rambling mess worth it.

Outside of Madea there’s not that much else to say about this movie. Tyler’s appearance as Joe, Madea’s cantankerous, dirty old man, brother is the only other bright spot in the film, as we watch him fight with Madea and hit on anything that moves. Kimberly Elise, albeit a very talented actress pouts, yells, screams and otherwise overacts her way through the role of the jilted Helen. And the absolutely handsome Shemar Moore from The Young and The Restless is convincing, although uninteresting as Orlando, Helen’s new and sappy love interest. Orlando’s dialogue couldn’t get anymore cheesy or saccharine, “I’ll love you through your pain” or “I’ll be your knight in shining armor.” Although he delivers these lines as if he sincerely believes what he saying it stills sounds as if it is straight out of a bad romance novel.

I will say that if you like Perry’s stage work, then you will love this movie. He stays true to what works for him on stage, so you Perry fans won’t be disappointed. However, if you’re unfamiliar with Perry and his work and you were thinking about seeing this film, don’t. You’ll be sorely disappointed and will demand your money back.

The Non-Definitive List of E-zine Directories

Filed under: Entertainment Events — admin at 10:02 pm on Sunday, November 23, 2008

This article is written for anybody who reads, publishes or plans to publish and e-zine or newsletter.

Whenever I read about the best ways to promote an online newsletter, listing in e-zine directories is always mentioned as one of those ‘no-brainer’ things that every publisher should automatically do.

So I figured, why not? Everyone else seems to be doing it, I’d better do the same.

Not so easy. In the first place, try looking up ‘ezine directories’ on google. I got 1690 results. A lot of those results turned out not to be a directory, but a list of other directories. The list seemed endless.

In the second place, most of the lists of directories I found turned out to be hopelessly out of date.

So I decided to build my own list of e-zine directories

As I started following the links I hit up against one of the worst aspects of the Internet. Here is a list of the 14 principle reasons why so many of the links turned out to be useless:

1. Site no longer exists 2. Site appears to exist, but content is all pre 1998 3. Site appears to be running, but many links are dead 4. Message says ‘Site no longer maintained.’ 5. Site so badly designed, navigation impossible 6. Site caused my eyes to bleed (figuratively!) 7. Site bombarded me with multiple pop-ups 8. Site not relevant (no e-zine list) 9. Site appeared to be a scam 10. Site redirected to a different URL 11. Payment required to list e-zine 12. Site offered no explanation, name or logo 13. Site no longer accepting submissions 14. Site ‘under construction.’

According to my ‘History’ file, I have visited over 800 sites in the past 3 days. My back hurts, my eyes hurt and my brain has turned to jelly. But I think that I have done it!

All told, I have boiled these 800 ‘possibles’ down to a list of 33 e-zine directory sites that all work, and all accept submissions. That list can be freely accessed on the BizE-zine web site at

http://www.BizE-zine.com/directories1.htm

In order to test them, I have submitted my newsletter details to every one (apart from paml.com which seems to be working, but the link to the submit page doesn’t.) The responses I have had so far are varied:

1. No response
2. A polite email confirming my submission 3. Immediate listing
4. An onscreen notice confirming submission and advising that entry to the list may take some time.

I plan to revisit each of the sites after one month and report back on whether I got listed or not.

Of course, I have no idea whether I will get any new subscribers from all this effort, but I made my entries in such a way as to be able to track the source of any submissions that do arise. I will report on that too in a month.

Six of the sites also accept postings of articles. This could be very useful, but in a few cases, it seemed easier to post than to read those which were already there! Maybe that was just me.

Nine sites also had a good amount of extra content which would be very useful to publishers of e-zines.

These are all indicated on the BizE-zine web site.

Finally, I have ranked the 33 sites in order of their Alexa ranking. This purports to measure the site’s traffic. I am not sure about the legality of quoting the Alexa figures directly, so I have simply put the sites in order - highest traffic at the top.

Is this list definitive? I hope not! I am sure that there must be lots more sites on the Internet that could be included. If you run one, or know of one, please email me at mailto:martin@BizE-zine.com so that I can update the list.

Similarly, if you have had any success with any of the sites I have listed, please let me know - perhaps I can include a ‘users comments’ section on the web page.

My next project is to do the same thing for Article repositories … but not right now - I feel a migraine coming on.

Teens Stand on Faith: My Last Column

Filed under: Entertainment Events — admin at 9:53 pm on Sunday, November 23, 2008

I want let people know that not all kids and young people are doing wrong. There are young people who are trying to help make this world better.
One of the goals I have in doing these columns is to encourage people to get MAD. MAD means to make a difference. I also want let people know that not all kids and young people are doing wrong. There are young people who are trying to help make this world better. Here is an example.

The top two graduates of Brookville High School in VA. urged their classmates to remember the lessons they learned in their youth and make a commitment to serve as they leave high school.

Speaking to the high school’s other 206 graduates and thousands of family, friends and school officials, Brooksie Elizabeth Blanks said, “Don’t be afraid to stand up for what you believe in but learn the art of forgiving and forgetting.”

Sarah Elizabeth Wright asked that students “love unconditionally, live compassionately and leave with a smile.” Wright asked her fellow graduates to make it their lives’ purposes to serve others.

I know someone else who gave everything (for you). His name is Jesus Christ,” she said, which was met with cheers and applause.

She urged students to give their lives to the Lord.

“I guarantee He is going to give you peace,” she said. “I know you won’t regret (giving your life to Jesus). I know I haven’t.”

Students shook hands with and hugged teachers standing in front of the graduation stage as they walked single-file to their seats.

I do not know about you but hearing about what these teens did gives me hope that America can be changed by God.

On another subject I have loved doing these columns but this might be my last one for awhile because in about a week I am off to do a short term mission.

I am going be helping work with underprivileged kids in a daily vacation Bible school.

If you have any thoughts or want know more about what I will be doing please email me.

Tips for the Summer Grill

Filed under: Entertainment Events — admin at 11:05 am on Saturday, November 22, 2008

(NC)There is nothing that says summer like grillin’ and chillin’ at the backyard BBQ. Steaks, chicken, ribs or burgers, they all seem to taste better when cooked on the grill. But as good as they taste now, there are a number of “tips” that can help you make the most of your summer grill

Jack Daniel’s has long been a part of BBQing in the US, sponsoring a number of BBQ contests and being a key ingredient in some of the best BBQ sauces. We’ve assembled a few of the tips that have helped past winners of those competitions, and have listed them here for you:

1. Start with a clean grill. Although that salmon you prepared last night was the best ever, it probably won’t enhance the taste of the hamburgers you’re having today. Scrub the grill with a wire brush and abrasive pad to remove all remnants of your past successes. You’re about to create a new masterpiece!

2. Oil the grill with a good vegetable or olive oil. You’ve paid good money for the food you’re about to cook. Let’s not leave part of it stuck to the grill!

3. Pre-heat the grill on high for at least 10 - 15 minutes, or light the charcoal about 20 - 30 minutes before you start the cooking. You want to be sure the grill is hot enough to sear the meat to seal in the natural juices.

4. Place a foil pie plate half-filled with extra marinade mixed with water on the searing surface (flavourizer bars, lava rocks, etc) directly under the part of the grill where the meat will be. Used with thicker cuts of meat, this will help to add flavour and keep the meat juicy.

5. Season the food lightly before placing it on the grill. Food has wonderful natural flavour that BBQing enhances. If you like a bit of spice, try a dry rub or a marinade (which will also help to tenderize less expensive cuts of meat).

6. After quickly searing the meat on both sides, reduce the heat to medium (raise the rack if using charcoal) and close the grill cover. Resist the temptation to open the grill cover more than just twice more…once to turn the meat, and then for the final five minutes. Doing this will make the food wonderfully tender.

7. Put sauces on the food in the last 5 minutes of grilling time. Most sauces have fats and sugar in them which will burn if put on too early. The fire department has better things to do than helping you cook.

This sauce is great for perking up any simply grilled meats, poultry or fish. Brush it on just minutes before you pull the meat off the grill.

Jack’s Secret Weapon All-Purpose BBQ Glaze

1/2 cup Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey

1/2 cup soy sauce

1/2 cup ketchup

1 cup brown sugar

1 teaspoon garlic powder

Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan. Simmer until slightly thickened, about 5 minutes. Makes about 1 1/2 cups.

Visit the Jack Daniel’s website at www.jackdaniels.com, to find lots of good ideas to help with your Summer Grill.
